Translucent "clear" braces

With all the cosmetic innovations available in orthodontics, the most effective, efficient, and least expensive means of accomplishing "esthetic" comprehensive orthodontics for adults or children is via ceramic (porcelain) brackets. Because they are made of tooth colored ceramic material, these brackets are highly esthetic but function just as well as the traditional metal braces. Used in conjunction with precision bracket positioning (ezBond), treatment with ceramic brackets offers the best combination of efficiency, effectiveness, and esthetics.

After only a short time on the market, Invisalign has become perhaps the most well known innovation in orthodontics – due largely to their aggressive advertising campaign. The possibilities for further innovations are just beginning to be explored.

Invisalign was developed as an alternative to braces as a means of straightening teeth. Its primary advantage over traditional braces is the ability to accomplish tooth alignment without the need for wearing bulky, unattractive metal or clear braces. It is "effectively" invisible, though not completely – it is certainly a vast cosmetic improvement over braces. Furthermore, it is quite comfortable to wear and does not significantly effect speech.

Invisalign accomplishes tooth movements through the fabrication of customized clear plastic "aligners". The thin, clear plastic material fits "like a glove" over the teeth. The aligners are changed every two weeks and each new aligner has a small degree of movement built in. As one progresses through the series of aligners, the teeth are gradually aligned.

While Invisalign is a great tool for simple cosmetic problems, it has mechanical limitations that limit its usefulness for many patients. When used in conjunction with other appliances and innovative techniques, invisalign can be a very useful tool for maintaining the best cosmetic appearance during treatment.
